| Résumé: | In 1924, the Flemish expressionist poet Paul van Ostaijen translated five short prose pieces from Franz Kafka’s debut collection Betrachtung (1912/1913). The five micro-stories appeared in 1925 in the periodical Vlaamsche Arbeid, in memory of the Prague writer’s death. The early translations attest to Van Ostaijen’s lifelong fascination with his German-speaking contemporary. While usually the link is drawn between Kafka’s work and Van Ostaijen’s prose novels, I want to read these ‘poemata in prose’ against the backdrop of Van Ostaijen’s poetry. I try to show that there are many parallels with Van Ostaijen’s new poetics, which cluster around key concepts such as ‘pregnance’ and the ‘organic’.
