| Riassunto: | The article “Die Aufklärung” (1897) belongs to Ernst Troeltsch’s least ambivalent texts on modernity and the Enlightenment—two central themes throughout his work. Remarkably, among the most frequently cited bibliographic sources are the works of the French philosopher and historian Hippolyte Taine : his polemical Origins of Contemporary France and his History of English Literature. This article aims to analyze Troeltsch’s reception of Taine, focusing in particular on the authors respective conceptions of England and France in the 17th and 18th centuries.
