Opis
Sažetak:A work of celebration and lamentation, but also of admonition, La Serre’s Mausolée (1634) is first and foremost a monument: “Built to withstand the test of centuries,” rich in “invention,” “craftsmanship,” and “art,” it can be read as the analogon to the funerary architecture that presides over it. To begin with, this article will focus on this act of monumentalizing ‐ which exalts the power visual images and discourse have to “bring to light” an absent figure. Then we will show that La Serre’s Mausolée is more than just an encomiastic exercise with its own constraints. We will suggest that La Serre subtly outlines the contours of a second work, contained, so to speak, in a virtual state within the first; and in doing so, engages in formal exploration.
