Crynodeb:• Research objectivesMany management studies highlight two distinct perspectives on the sharing or retention of information in interorganizational relationships. This article examines the relevance of this approach, raising a crucial question: to what extent do members of a distribution channel agree to share information with their partners to work towards the success of a collective project, while retaining information to preserve their individual interests?• MethodologyAn exploratory qualitative study was conducted using semi-structured interviews with logistics service providers (LSP) and food retailing companies, as well as television and radio interviews. All data was manually coded, uncovering four general themes.• ResultsThe exploratory field study reveals that mutual trust, critical events, and the levels and types of information shared play key roles in understanding information sharing within distribution channels. The value of the empirical analysis lies in the dynamic articulation of these factors over time.• Conceptual an managerial implicationsThe “waves” model, a conceptual framework of information sharing, suggests that an inter-organizational relationship is neither entirely transparent nor completely opaque. This model presents two managerial implications: anticipation and adaptation.• OriginalityThe conceptual “waves” model shows that an information exchange relationship within a distribution channel is akin to a romantic relationship: it often experiences ups and downs, oscillating between transparency and opacity without necessarily leading to a “divorce” between partners.
