Descripció
Sumari:This article explores traumatic silences in the literature of testimony and in the clinic with persons who survived political violence. The author examines key factors contributing to impede survivors’ capacity of language use (mother tongue and language of country of exile) in the aftermath of trauma, undermining their ability to provide credible testimony of their life histories, a sine qua non condition for their access to refugee status in France. The conjunction of ruptures in family and intimate relations, of survivors’ ongoing traumatic startle response, and of certain perverse aspects of the asylum procedure can cause a “cutting of tongues”, signified by prolonged silences or even symptomatic mutism. The author concludes with an excerpt of her analytic work with a former child soldier deprived of his mother tongue with whom she succeeds in working through the wall of silences by way of the transference relation, allowing him to reconnect with his dead parents and to engage in a live love relation.
