Shrnutí:Our paper address uncertainty as a structural feature of contemporary hospital institutions and explores how the anxiety stemming from this uncertainty may or may not be managed emotionally by the directors tasked with organizing these institutions. Drawing on materials collected during an extensive ethnographic study of this population, we hypothesize that hospital directors, whether consciously or not, engage in a process of working through their own anxiety – and at times, that of others – when faced with uncertainty. We argue that this emotional work could pave the way for a clinical mode of listening that enables an interpretive stance centered on the lived experience of uncertainty, rather than being confined to the concrete organization of the institution. We link this acceptance of not-knowing to philosophical notions of non-action and propose that reflecting on the emotional consequences of uncertainty can help avoid rushed, reactionary decision-making.
