Through the study of a specific case, the fantasy of self-generation is explored — not as a symptom of psychosis, but as a creative response to the uncertainty surrounding the transmission of a genetic disease. In the context of a parent-infant unit, where bonds are intricately formed, we examine the dual support provided by the baby’s abilities, which activate maternal functions in a mother grappling with uncertainty about her maternal role, and the mother’s imaginative construction of a form of spontaneous generation. This fantasy allows her to rewrite her life story both literally (through drafting a will) and figuratively (through her family genograms). This case study is particularly significant as it highlights how the fantasy of self-generation can function as a creative attempt to adapt to life’s challenges and uncertainties. |
