Summary:Family rituals structure relationships and contribute to a sense of belonging. They have generally been studied in healthy families. But what about families with attachment disorders ? In these families, we observe recurrent fights that are organized like a ritual. In this article, we explore how these rituals maintain a family identity from a perspective that takes into account the complexity of the processes by integrating the interactions between motivation (reversal theory), cognition (constructivist approach), emotion regulation and autobiographical memory. This integrative perspective can guide the therapist in creating a secure space for these repetitive family interactions to evolve.
