| Gaia: | Pierre Gire was a remarkable figure at Lyon Catholic University, both intellectually and quite simply on a human level. A diocesan priest and heir to the Second Vatican Council, with a questioning spirit and a commitment to dialogue with culture and the contemporary world, this teacher-researcher drew on the philosophical tradition to offer all his interlocutors a path of truth oriented toward the Absolute. He explored four lines of thought in his search for faith’s intelligibility : through his anthropological grounding and the breadth of his work, he engaged critically with the culture of his time ; he affirmed philosophy’s role as a mediator and source of critical inquiry among various forms of knowledge ; this led him to develop a metaphysical reflection open to the search for what is essential in every human life – all sustained by the deep desire that unified both his work and his personal life : the desire for Life in God as a spiritual and mystical journey sought by every mind in search of the Absolute.
