| Shrnutí: | The motive for enforced disappearances committed during Algeria’s ‘black decade’, a period of endless violence between armed Islamist groups and the armed forces of (and by) the state, which began in the early 1990s, is often underestimated. This article begins by examining the mutual demonisation that preceded or accompanied revenge, which was sometimes carried out after lengthy ruminations. Then, using a sample of cases of the disappeared collected, among others, by the collective of families of the disappeared in Algeria, it looks at the different forms of revenge – punitive, repressive, linked to resentment or vicarious. |
