| Gaia: | The Gaza Strip has made a shift towards intensive agriculture which has materialized in the proliferation of greenhouses in urban areas. This transformation has contributed to reducing poverty and unemployment and has been financed as such by numerous international donors. Its viability is however threatened by the deep environmental crisis that come out of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. This conflict has taken on an unprecedented scale since October 7, 2023 and has already led to the destruction of a major part of productive capacities. Through the lens of the empowerment debate, this article intends to show that political emancipation is the precondition for lasting agricultural development in the Gaza Strip, an obvious fact that comes out with a never seen before level of violence. The frame of this political empowerment is yet to be invented. |
