| Resumo: | This article examines Cyprus’ renewed role in the new European order. Defined largely by its emphasis on migration management, this order places ‘frontline’ States as guardians of the EU borders. As other States, the Republic of Cyprus is then in charge of implementing EU deterrent policies and, in order to do this, has to enhance its national security structures. But this results in a “securization” agenda that eclipses human rights concerns. Moreover securitizing migration in this way means eroding the relations of these countries with non-European neighbors. In the case of Cyprus this means that old discourses about the conflict with Turkey are relaunched as concerns over migration are tied to Turkish expansionism. The article examines this association between the two issues and the effects it has on the ground for refugees and activists. |
