| Summary: | Since the 2004 referendum that rejected the Annan plan, there has been a series of negotiations aimed at ending the Cypriot crisis. Not only did they all fail, but a new disruptive factor was added to thosealready preventingprogress: the discovery of hydrocarbons in the eastern Mediterranean seabed. The Republic of Cyprus has signed agreements with several countries of the region for the extraction of gas from these fields. This is unacceptable to Turkey because the projects exclude the Turkish Cypriots, and violate Turkey’s maritime borders. This article explores the possibility of reversing the impact of newly discovered resources by including them in the talks for the European Green Deal, with a view to transition towards the exclusive production of green energies, involving all of the peoples of the region, including the various Cypriot communities. |
