Samenvatting:On the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the invasion and division of Cyprus by Turkey (1974), it’s worth looking back at the political forces militating for reconciliation between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots and the reunification of the island. In order to assess the viability, in the present circumstances, of such a project, this article offers a retrospective on the self-proclaimed standard-bearer of this “common homeland,” the Cypriot Communist AKEL party, currently located in the “Greek” south of the island. The article shows that too many past compromises have ended up damaging the credibility, and therefore the effectiveness, not only of AKEL, but of all the traditional Cypriot parties in the search for a solution to “the Cyprus question.” Perhaps the latter should rather be sought on the side of new actors, particularly among civil society organizations.
