Résumé:Globalisation and democracy. The counter-example of Tunisia. On December 2nd, 2003, during a conversation with Zine el Abidine Ben Ali at the presidential palace overlooking the hills of Carthage, Colin Powel declared «  Tunisia has already done so much that its people are waiting for even more in terms of political reforms and a more open society (...). I have encouraged the Tunisian leaders to continue this process political reform and economic change ». This process bas become the main line of the United States ; American politics are aimed at harmonizing liberal globalization and worldwide democracy : democracy and economic liberalization must therefore march in step. However, this assumed harmony is far from self-evident. In Tunisia, this hypothesis hasn’t been proven, to say the least. The progress of the integration of Tunisia into the global market and « globalization » seems, on the contrary, to go hand in hand with the reinforcement of the coercive measures and the political exploitation of the population, including the wealthiest classes, who are the principal beneficiaries of the new policies.
