Résumé:How to continue “confluating” ? I entered into the editorial committee of this review, after having been invited by Jean-Paul Chagnollaud. More often than not, everything has gone well, in spite of the inevitable frictions between people with different interests, cultures and personal histories. But, for a short time now, a feeling of uneasiness has come over me. During the preparation of this issue, I made known my disapproval of the incredible responsibility that the editors placed on Israel and on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict for the difficulty of the Arab world to come to terms with democracy. I admit that the problem exists, at least on account of the manipulation by the governments in power of their own people, but I believe as well that the use of a political scapegoat is not the needed solution for the entry of the Arab world into a more democratic era. For this reason, I wish to express my thoughts in a short article in order that the disagreements within the review can be shown, even if they are, for the moment, only minor. This “statement of belief” may seem unilateral. It does not take up the fundamental issues of the criminal and politically disastrous character of the Israeli policies, whether it is the colonies, the wall, the destruction of houses, targeted assassinations, etc. But in order to have a dialogue, one must listen to the other side.
