Crynodeb:This study examines growing concerns and efforts to curb emissions and environmental disruptions resulting from the production of aluminum in British Columbia at Kitimat since the 1970s. Airbourne emissions, water contamination, and the environmental impact of shipping traffic made the aluminum smelter at Kitimat a controversial industrial site in an otherwise pristine and remote wilderness. Identifying the contaminants of aluminum production on the Pacific coast of Canada presented challenges to its sustainable production. Ultimately, definitions of sustainability created by regulatory agencies changed to favour economic development, ranking economy over environment.
