| Streszczenie: | This article analyzes the birth and development of sacred or divine kingships in Madagascar. It reassesses Deschamps’ hypothesis which situates the origin of Malagasy kingships in Southeastern Madagascar, a region marked by Islamic influences. It examines the cultural impact of various Indonesian migrants, and the result of their mixing with East African populations, as well as the characteristics of the Antemoro kingdom which formed during the sixteenth century. It describes the ways in which the connection of long-distance trade with internal developments influenced various kingdoms’ trajectories. Although the Southeastern coast, where the Zafiraminia settled, did have historical significance in the development of kingships, this study reveals that the role played therein by the western coast along with the Northern Malagasy region’s cosmopolitan ports has been widely underestimated. |
