| Samenvatting: | This paper focuses on body use and clothing style, and what they tell us about respect for gender norms and the ability, or willingness, to compromise with these norms or to reappropriate them to one’s own advantage. It is grounded upon the study of Mozabite women living in their native territory (the M’Zab) or in a host area, El-Eulma town (Setif). A comparative study between these places sheds light on the difference between the use of body and clothing according to demographic weight and the strength of social relations. Wearing the aḥouli veil, a tool of invisibility for Mozabite woman in M’Zab, turns out to increase their visibility elsewhere, which explains why, in search of greater invisibility, they may opt for removing it. |
