Shrnutí:A trial of neighbours?Tutsi genocide defendants brought before their victims (Paris Assize Court, 2016-2018)Since 2014, Rwandan nationals have been tried in France for their participation in the 1994 Tutsi genocide. This was the case for Octavien Ngenzi and Tito Barahira, who were tried jointly in Paris in 2016 (first instance) and 2018 (on appeal). Their former neighbours were called to testify at their trials. Two decades after the genocide, a trial in France became a setting for “reunions” and confrontation between the accused and the victims as civil parties. Based on an ethnography of these trials and a study of their audiovisual archives, this article considers what resulted from this proximity at the heart of the hearing, in an unprecedented face-to-face encounter made possible by criminal procedure.
