| Summary: | How can contemporary ethnology inherit Pierre Clastres’ idea of “society against the State”? Guided by this question, we set out to analyse the oscillation of political forms in the South American lowlands, which runs counter to the ideal of undifferentiated societies free of asymmetrical relations. We compare this analysis with reflections on other parts of the world, where the model of “seasonal variation” is highlighted, opening up the possibility of thinking about reversals and “creative involutions”. We conclude the essay by suggesting that it is possible to bring these analyses and reflections closer to the Clastrian proposal, in its fierce critique of the Hegelian philosophy of history and in its commitment to establishing an effective dialogue between Western and Amerindian political philosophies. We need to go beyond the static version of the “counter-state” and combine it with the movement of oscillations and reversibilities. |
