| Gaia: | Mainstream music aims to reach for mass audience. Thus, it must be effortlessly accessible, universally audible. However, this paper argues that, like any other musical experience, listening to mainstream music implies the activity of understanding a meaning. After showing that mainstream song lyrics use stereotypes to ensure their own legibility, we shall draw on the work of Leonard Meyer to make sense of the idea of a specifically musical meaning. In doing so, we shall coin the concept of hyperaudibility to describe the processes by which mainstream music informs the listening experience in such in order to make musical meaning immediately available. |
