| Shrnutí: | The publication of Guillaume Budé’s Institution du prince was a complex and fraught
affair. The first editions in Lyon and Larrivour were printed, withdrawn from sale, and
then republished but without some of the original preliminary texts. The first Paris
edition was also problematic, but less because of the content than for the commercial
context in which it appeared. This article looks at the rival claims of the publishers of
the Paris and Larrivour editions as they sought to obtain privileges that would guarantee them a commercial monopoly for the distribution of Budé’s text. It examines
the strange double privilege obtained by the Larrivour publisher—the second of
which only appeared in the edition printed in Paris. Importantly, a document hitherto
unknown to Budé scholars, an agreement between the publishers, sheds new light on
the reasons for this extraordinary situation. As well as explaining the process that led
to the publication of the Parisian edition, it reveals the tensions within the French
book trade and the economics of book production in the sixteenth century. It allows
us to appreciate the difficult relationship between powerful Parisian booksellers and
their provincial counterparts. The resolution of the conflict illustrates how both were
able to turn their disagreement into a mutually beneficial commercial agreement that
allowed for a better distribution of both the Larrivour and Paris editions. |
