Yhteenveto:The Works of the Greek Fathers appear at the beginning of the 16th century in éditions in the original language having up to that time been only partially available by means of Latin translations. Overseen by eminent humanists such as Erasmus for example, these editions are an indication of the growing interest of the Republic of Letters in patristic sources, the foundation of a renewal of faith and of a rebirth of eloquence in the Christian world. A close study of several editions of the two Greek Fathers St John Chrysostom and St Basil, who were amongst the favourite authors of the Renaissance, give some indication of the motives which inspired publishers and readers of patristic Works. The putting together of huge editions aiming on the one hand at completeness, and on the other at the circulation of texts in a handier format for the university and the educated public, as sensitive to the rhetoric as they were to the evangelical message of patristic works, demonstrates the preoccupations of the two worlds which lived side by side in the Europe of the Renaissance. Against the specialists, traditional theologians who were the natural public for editions of the Greek Fathers in the original language, was set the world of Christian humanism, capable of a more aesthetic approach to patristic Works.
