| Shrnutí: | Undertaken by a team of researchers from the Centre de Correspondances du
XIXe siècle of the Paris-Sorbonne University, the edition of the Correspondance générale
d’Alfred de Vigny (two volumes of which have just been published) helps to assess the
importance of the epistolary activity in his life as well as in his work. The material study
of original documents (autograph letters and minutes, preparatory notes, rough
classification, etc.) reveals the utmost care Alfred de Vigny approached this mode of
communication with.
Scrupulous reader that he was, Vigny often annotated the letters he wouldreceive,
so that it becomes possible to reconstruct his successive reactions, up to the answer,
which is rarely spontaneous: we find a multiplication of drafts pointing to a writing
that is always striving for precision. This concern is not simply conceptual, for it can
turn into a kind of mania, the symptoms of which are the choice of the right paper or
ink and the classifications, started again several times.
Thus, the correspondence act gives birth in Vigny to a genuine ceremony of the
letter, a performance through which he presents and tries to define his own personality,
first for himself, but also for his close friends and for posterity. |
