Riassunto:Although it may be too indulgent to conclude, like some critics of the last century, that the “birth” of Balzac in 1829 is little more than a “resurrection,” and even though Saint-Aubin (alias Lord R’hoone) is not yet the Balzac of the Comédie humaine, the pseudonymous novels of the 1820s remain fundamental for any study of the author’s incomprehensibilities and their novelistic, theoretical and commercial meaning. He asks the important question as early as 1822: “Does a great philosophical idea lose its price for being in a novel?” He knows that a wider public will not understand, but he sacrifices an easy readability to win the interest of more educated readers and accomplish his artistic goals. But we still read his novels today mostly on account of his brilliant imagination, and it is exactly this combination of ideas and imagination that creates one of the foundations of the modern and psychological novel to come.
