Περίληψη:Gold and death are omnipresent in this novel from the very beginning. Death is a traditional theme of the story, affecting the Grandet household in its dark, damp setting. Guillaume Grandet’s suicide, and the reactions it provokes in the family are an important event that draws a dividing line between Eugénie and her father. Mrs Grandet’s death accentuates this divide: the old miser’s mocking materialism contrasts with his daughter’s sublime devotion. Revealing, in the chemical sense of the word, death reveals the characters to themselves.
