Résumé:Eugénie Grandet arouses the reader’s sympathy but does she arouse their interest? Nothing is less certain. She melts away behind her father; her status as a woman makes her invisible as also does an apparent attitude of submissiveness on her part. In spite of her discreet nature compared to her imposing father, there is enough subtlety to Eugénie’s character to enable her to resist not only her father’s authority but also the effects of her reputation as a resigned victim. Even though her silence is interpreted as expressing a reaction to oppression, her actual actions prove to be an effective response to the power games conducted by the men of her entourage.
