| Streszczenie: | Titos Patrikios’s poem entitled “Ανάμνηση από την Αθήνα” (Memory of Athens) is one of the erotic poems in the collection “Λυσιμελής πόθος,” published in 2014. It depicts the landscape of a rainy city, and the way in which women’s faces and bodies move. The poem’s fiction is rendered in a prosaic and sober style. The omniscient but impersonal narrator remembers a scene in an appartement building where three unidentified young women hurry up the iron stairs that lead to the terrace. These verses add irony to the title, as they encompass both the experience and its reflection, revealing that the only true experience is that of the gaze. Thus, the scenery and the sexual insinuations become the imaginary terrain of a voyeuristic experience, where the narrator tries to substitute the object of desire—the woman’s body—with its graphical representation. The description of space and the action woven within the text encourage the idea that the gaze denotes the distance separating the subject from the women’s bodies, while the language through which the lyrical subject then attempts to approach them only increases that distance. Both cases converge in the experience of voyeurism, where the intensity of unfulfillment certifies the distance and exclusion of the observer. |
