| Gaia: | ‘Dreaming’ as a mechanism for transforming the local religious landscape of Strumica (FYR of Macedonia)The religious activity of people is in direct connection to the sacred geography and constantly changes it. Religious landscape is a mirror of the religious life of collectivities and people set in places that actively shape their environment; it is a sort of map which helps deciphering religious processes and following the evolutions in the religious life of communities in a given area. This paper deals with religious facts that are broadly characterized as part of the post-socialist religious revival. Indeed, the point of view that religious modernity should not be reduced to outright secularization and counter-secularization processes might also be at work, is increasingly popular among anthropologists and ethnologists. The “religious revival” in the post-socialist societies in Southeastern Europe is a facet of the global processes of upsurge of religiosity. Its impact is visible in the changes of the local religious landscapes, which are especially dynamic during the last three decades. The paper draws the attention to one of these post-socialist spaces – the region of Strumica in the southeastern part of the Republic of Macedonia, contiguous to Southwestern Bulgaria. We shall examine the relation between religious activity and sacred geography on local level by presenting an example of non-institutional change in religious landscape which is based on local religiosity and on its typical forms of religious activity. |
