Zusammenfassung:Temesvár the multicultural, 1880-1914 : « Klein Wien » and capital of BanatUnlike the two multinational Empires which are its immediate neighbors, the Ottoman and the Russian one, the Habsburg Monarchy presents a linguistic and confessional diversity grounded on quite different political conditions. Since 1867, the respect of diversity is legally, at least in the lands under direct Austrian control ; the territories under Hungarian administration are however less respectful of linguistic identities and trends to magyarization are palpable. At the turn of the 20th century the transformation of the ancient regime of pluriculturalism (diverse populations living fully mixed) into one of multicultarilism (diverse populations living side by side, without mixing) is under way in all the provinces of the Dual Monarchy. This process of transformation and progressive segregation is followed on the example of Temesvar/Timisoara – the ‘capital city’ of the province of Banat – with a special attention to its religious landscape and to the institutions sustaining the different cultural identities.
