| Résumé: | After the collapse of the Bretton Woods monetary system, the US established a new regime, the Dollar-Wall street Regime. This regime combines the consolidation of the dollar in its position as international currency and the domination of US financial institutions, stock market, banks, and funds, concentrated in Wall Street. Far from being the mechanistic outcome of financial innovation, this new regime was implemented as a result of the direct action of successive US administrations, and is a crucial component of contemporary US hegemony. The dollar seigniorage dispenses the US from the usual balance of payment constraints. The domination of financial markets by Wall Street and an environment of free international circulation of capitals allowed the US to use ample dollar fluctations in order to destabilize emerging markets, ruin alternative models of development, and impose the dominance of the money-capital pole of capitalism and rentier ascendency. |
