Shrnutí:Paul Kennedy's 1988 best-seller, The Rise and Fall of the Great Powers, forecast an inevitable erosion of US power. The book missed the real significance of the Reagan years: the prodigality in defense expenditure contributed to restoring US world hegemony through its effect on the economy and on the Soviet Union. Kennedy acknowledges at present presently that the US is "closer than ever" to the dream of the coming of the American Century. The key problem faced now by the US in its relations with its traditional partners is the extent of its commitment to ("hegemony" in the Gramscian sense of the word, i. e. a leadership taking into consideration the wishes of its allies, as opposed to unilateralism in exerting coercive domination.
