Gaia:Most research dealing with young people living in distressed neighbourhoods has rightly focussed on the problematic nature of the construction on their part of any social and political consciousness, given the degree of the social disorganisation affecting them. In order to arrive at a better understanding of their representation of social relations, of their conflictual, uneasy relation to institutions, and also of the way in which they participate in the life of these neighbourhoods, a number of other dimensions must also be considered. These include the discordant nature of their relation to school and to the model of integration through work, the changes induced in the processes of institutionalised socialisation by the development of urban segregation and, finally, the bureaucratic rigidity demonstrated by numerous institutions.
