| Résumé: | This paper offers a hypothesis for the understanding of the working-classis apparent loss of its central position in social history between the middle of the 19th and the middle of the 20th century. The working class can be said to have been overtaken and enveloped. thus finding itself laced in a situation of subordination, due to transformations within the salaried class itself: the transformations in question involve the differentiation of the salaried class, the emergence within it of variousservice sectors and upper strata, intermediary professions, managerial corps, etc. This subordination of the working class (which does not imply its disappearance) marked the shift, after the Second World War, from an industrial society to a society of salaried employment. The change became more acute after the crisis of the seventies, characterised by the destabilisation of established forms of work organisation and of work-related social insurance, with the working class as the principal victim. |
