| Zusammenfassung: | During the post-war period, European socialism maintained earlier options and aims: the fight for democracy, opposition to nationalism, the improvement of social welfare, a fraughtrelationship with communism. While socialists proved successful in their defence of democracy, they appear to have suffered numerous setbacks in their opposition to nationalism. The paper inquires whether the economic crisis ofthe 1970s may be taken as the explanation for the revision of economic doctrine carried out by socialists, and which would involve the abandonment of a commitmtent to nationalization. Since 1989, the relation to communism has been fundamentally transformed, and socialism would appear to have emerged from this experience displaying a considerable degree of bewilderment. |
