Zusammenfassung:Given the historic observation of the non-necessary adequation of the State to capitalist accumulation, the economist postulate of its derivation from capital or the market is rejected. Then, the State is considered a social relationship (a system of relations) whose own logic – contradictory vis-a-vis that of capital – can be theorized for itself and at levels of abstraction similar to those introduced by Marx for the capitalist relationship. Furthermore, we defend the idea that the "regulationist" categories of regime and regulation may be extended to the political order and to society as a whole: there are specific historical regimes of the reproduction of the State; there are regulation modes which insure the unity of societies in spite of their differenciation into logically contradictory and heterogeneous social practices. So a mode of regulation is seen as a set of monetary, judicial and ideological institutions sustaining the compatibility between the economic growth regime and the political development regime. Finally a quick view is given of how the relation betwen the wage labour nexus and the welfare State appears in this new perspective.
