Shrnutí:Elster's epistemology centres round a critique of collectivism and defence of methodological individualism, and a critique of functional explanations and defence of intentional explanations. It is argued that methodological individualism, although it raises interesring questions about the relationship between ideology and the individual, relies on abstractions ("the individual") as abstract as those of collectivism ("class"). It is also argued that if the critique of functionalism is welcome in so fur as it denounces the teleological bias of such explanations, its reliance on intentionalism seeks to insert Marxism within the anglo-saxon tradition of intentionality (Searle, Grice, Rawls), which has unwelcome consequences in the field of language. The essay schows that Elster's rare incursions in that field, in his book on Marx, are misguided; it attempts to suggest an alternative solution to the problems along tentatively Marxist lines.
