| Sumari: | Nation, Commerce, Society : Jews and Merchant Guilds in 18th Century ParisThe relationship between Jews and professional guilds are often summed up as a history of rejection. The attempt of several Jews of Avignon to join the Parisian haberdashery guild around 1770 does not deviate from this narrative. However, a close analysis of this failure through various individuals’ stories demonstrates that the failure was in fact relative, as many of these Avignon Jews in fact had close relations with the Parisian merchants. The refusal to officially integrate the Jews had less to do with a principled hostility towards non-Catholics than to the political fate of guilds in the 18th century. This detailed description also demonstrates that the emancipation of the Jews was not simply the result of cultural shifts, but also had its roots in their evolving interactions with the surrounding society. |
