Résumé:Writing for EnterpriseThe medieval lands with written law – the Iberian peninsula, the Midi of France, the Italian peninsula – have left a considerable production of public writings, through which Jews, as economic actors, have been historically quite visible. While less abundant, a corpus of private Hebrew writings complements these sources, shedding light on the art of enterprise during the Middle Ages. Here, the authors propose a presentation of these sources. Used in tribunals for the defense of rights or as business strategy, these public writings guarantee the fides or “good faith” of the contractor, while the private writings show business management techniques. Such sources provide rich historical insight on economic practices and the place of Jewish businessmen on the medieval markets of the Western Mediterranean in the XIVth century.
