William Gaddis is one of the great american writers of this century. His first three novels, the recognitions, Jr and Carpenter's gothic share the same thematic emphasis on origin and its questioning. The theme of origin, inherited from the american tradition, is inscribed within the text of the very first novel. It develops around the related themes of religion and art. The two other novels inherit from this thematic focus on origins which is redirected towards money in Jr and idelolgy in Carpenter's gothic. The question of origin is what gives fiction its specific form, in the play on beginnings and origin, in the use of dialogue as a mode of narration and composition, particularly in Jr. The orality in the text, which gives the sense of a mimetic transcription of speech leads to examine the notion of voice in writing. The narrative strategy reveals the nature of the text as a space in which temporal coordinates recède into the background. The textual space is charecterized by an excess of traditional novelistic conventions, as well as an aesthetics of fragmentation, which uses details as both structuring and destructuring elements. The intensification of the verbal universe also stems from the role of intertextuality within and between the novels, which contributes to further destabilizing the possibility of using origin as a reference. As a consequence, the theme of origin is combined with that of the fictional and the false, from the mascarades in the recognitions to the paper empire in Jr and the dissolving of narrative frontiers in Carpenter's gothic. The texts raise the problem of their reading : the cooperation.
