| 要約: | For the purposes of this book "The Age of the Forsytes" is taken as the "eighties and "nineties of the last century, when the upper-middle class which John Galsworthy portrays with such perceptive clarity in the Forsyte Saga were in their possessive prime. But the Saga gives only a part of the pictures : all the classes below the "Forsytes" -and that means the vast majority- are represented hardly at all. What, for instance, of the 30s-a-week clerk, the factory girl in her flimsy finery, the London policeman and Tommy Atkins in barracks, the hospital nurse ant the Fleet Street journalist, the sweated tailor in the East End, tradesmen and shop assistants, stage players and ballet dancers, the Board School teache, the "Embankment dossers" and the "girls of the Dust-hole"? Well, they are all in the pages of this book, together with many, many more of Late Victorian "types". Of course, "the Forsytes" have their showing, and the opening chapter with its intimately detailed description of the sort of homes they lived in and their manner of behaviour will make a strong appeal to those who have found the series on BBC Television of such absorbing interest....-jaquette. |
