| Sumari: | From 1890 to the present, Japanese-style gardens have been created on the West Coast so skillfully and in such large numbers that they have become an integral part of the region's landscape and culture. "Japanese-style gardens of the pacific West Coast" explores the signifiance of these delightful and elegant landscapes, presenting them as being distingly NorthAmerican rather than imitations of "authentic" gardens in Japan. Often designed by first generation Japanese immigrants (issei) as a way of both maintening ties to their homeland and as means of assimilating into their new country, the gardens offer a dual reflection of North American attitudes toward Japan and the complex role of Japanese culture before, during, and after World War II. In this volume are twenty gardens in California, Oregon, Washington and British Columbia, photographed in spectacular color by Melba Levick, and authoritatively documented by Kendall H. Brown. The gardens featured range from the oldest and most visited, the Japanese Tea Garden at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, to those as exquisite private retreats such as Lotusland, Madame Ganna Walska's estate in Monteclito, California, and the famou Golden Door Spa in Escondido, California, to some of the region's numerous university - and corporate-sponsored gardens. Each is discussed in terms of its place in evolution of the Japanese-style garden, its patronage, and the relation of its function to its design. Brown's comprehensive introduction illuminates the social and aesthetic motivations behind these beautiful and inspiring creations. |
