Description
Résumé:In little more than a century, Roman power and authority spread through the Greek world and irrevocably altered the course of its history. Previous studies have regularly approached the subject from the Roman point of view, interpreting the period of expansion as a shaping of the Greek East to the needs of Rome. In this book, Erich S. Gruen endeavors to look at the topic fom another angle, considering the Hellenistic context within which Roman expansion took place. The altered perspective brings a different picture into focus, showing that Greek traditions and modes of behavior proved tenacious and that Roman conduct abroad operated largely within categories long established in the Hellenistic world. The evidence discloses a preponderance of Greek rather than Roman ideas: a noteworthy readiness on the part of Roman policymakers to adjust to Hellenistic practices rather than to impose a system of their own. This study veers away from most treatments of Roman "imperialism", whether positive or negative. Instead it examines the institutions and attitudes that governed relationships between the two peoples. Gruen suggests that a mutual interaction took place -Rome finding Hellenistic principles congenial and convenient, and the Greeks manipulating the Roman presence to their own advantage
