Résumé:How do old people spend heir declining years? Whom do they see and how often? How many of them are miserable or poverty-stricken? Peter Townsend, one of the first members of the now famous Institute of Community Studies, gives here the first detailed answer to these questions by presenting, sympathetically and vividly, the results of his interviews with more than two hundred old people in Bethnal Green. He finds that the lot of the aged is perhaps less hard than it once was, and that family obligations are taken more seriously than before. But he also gives first-hand evidence of many shortcomings in the present social system, and these urgently call for attention.-4e de couv.
