A hundred years ago, "to be modern" meant to strive for a state of perfection ; today it means to modernize compulsively, perpetually, with no final state in sight and none desired. In Liquid Modernity Bauman develops his distinction between solid and liquid modernity by focusing on five concepts that have served to make sense of our shared human life - emancipation, individuality, time / space, work and community.
