Description
Résumé:The affluent workers studied in this book are employees of three major industrial concerns sited in Luton, a town which benefited faster and more consisently than almost any other in Britain from the economic progress of the 'fifties and early 'sixties". The three firms were selected as being among Luton's best-paying employers and also on account of their advanced personnel and labour relations policies. At the same time, this choice enabled comparisons to be made between workers engaged in very different types of production system. On the basis of material from interviews and other data, the authors examine in detail worker's experience of their industrial jobs, their relations with workmates, and the nature of their attachment both to the organizations which employ them and to their trade unions. Throughout the monograph the authors consider the results they present in relation to those of studies of more 'traditional' industrial workers, and also in relation to current theoretical approaches in industrial sociology. In a concluding chapter they review what appear to be the main implications of their research in both its theoretical and descriptive aspects. This study forms part of a larger project aimed at testing empirically the widely accepted thesis of the progressive assimilation of manual workers and their families into the pattern of middle class social life. The present monograph will be followed by a companion volume, The Affluent Worker: Political Attitudes and Behaviour. There will also be reports on family and community life, with a final monograph bringing together the conclusions of these previous studies in a comprehensive assessment of the place of affluent worker in the British class structure.
