Within the distinction between monist and dualist conceptions of representation, the article analyzes some theoretical contributions and proposals put forward during the French Revolution, based on the belief that, although rooted in a specific historical context, they can still offer valuable insights for contemporary reflection. On the one hand, the Revolution planted the seeds of the authoritarian tendencies potentially inherent in democracy; on the other, it also marked the moment when the first reflections and institutional proposals were developed to make the representative system a safeguard for democracy itself. Sieyès and Condorcet – respectively, a theorist of representative government and of representative democracy – stand as its most original expressions. |
