More broadly, the idea of voluntary servitude leads to a rethinking of the idea of modernity. La Boétie’s oxymoron is also conceived as a critique of the most manifest contradictions in the central field of work and its relationship with contemporary capitalism. The Author analyze two dimensions of the Discours de la servitude volontaire by Étienne de La Boétie. If this work constitutes a key moment in the history of thought, the idea of voluntary servitude is the expression of an essential reality of our modern human condition. |
