The Novabot project stands at the intersection of arts and sciences, exploring the effect of poetic enunciation on the actor’s body while making this impact visible and shareable through filmic and physiological capture tools. This approach, inspired by the theoretical texts of Valère Novarina, stems from research focused on how poetic language influences the body and psyche of the performer on stage. The Novabot project combines filmic and physiological technologies to perform a poetic dissection of the actor’s body. It is a process of fragmentation and recomposition aimed at revealing not only the visible body but also its internal manifestations, which are imperceptible to the naked eye. In this sense, the project transcends the narrative conventions of theater to create a framework where the actor’s body and technologies share a common space for scenic creation. This creation relies on the staging of a drone, a blimp and a camera, which capture the actor’s body from various angles, amplifying stage presence through real-time projections. These aerial objects are not merely capture tools but they actively participate in the dramaturgy, introducing dynamic perspectives of distancing and closeness. Simultaneously, physiological sensors, such as a respiratory belt and eye-tracking glasses, allow for the real time visualization of internal phenomena, breathing rhythm and field of vision, partially translating the resonance of poetic language on the actor’s body. This approach, which combines poetic enunciation with physiological measurement instruments and filmic capture, is part of a tradition of experimentation that interrogates the materiality of the scenic body and its relationship to the audience. Renowned figures in contemporary theater have experimented with similar processes among others: Peter Sellars, the Wooster Group, Jean-François Peyret, Roméo Castellucci, Oriza Hirata, Cyril Teste…One of the objectives of the Novabot creation is to explore how these technologies, by redefining the way the actor’s body is perceived, modify the relationship between the stage and the audience.Since the advent of new technologies, theater has gradually opened up to hybrid scenic forms where the interaction between the actor’s body and technological devices redefines stage presence. In this perspective, Novabot aligns with a continuum of theatrical experiences that seek to explore the potentials of the body through machines. By using drones, physiological sensors, and real-time projections, Novabot offers a form of augmented theater where the actor’s body is multiplied, both in physical space and in the spectator’s imaginative space. In this theater, the traditionally linear dramatic action is often replaced by a series of scenic events where text, body, and technology intertwine, creating a polyphony of mediums. The approach of Novabot can thus be seen as an extension of this dynamic, where the introduction of devices like drones and physiological sensors creates a fragmented dramaturgy. The actor’s body becomes a space of transformation where presence is modulated by their projected doubles and interactions with machines. Thus, this attempt envisions the encounter between theater and technology as a coexistence of multiple scenic media that resonate with each other to reveal meaning within these forms of dramaturgy.Novabot aims to immerse the audience in the heart of the actor’s practice, where certain physical actions become perceptible through projections. By visualizing close-ups of the body and physiological data such as breathing or field of vision, audience is invited to enter an intimate dimension of the scenic experience. Here, we choose to unfold the dramaturgy to allow you to grasp what unfolds on stage without ignoring its complexity. By presenting the scenic process step by step, we aim not only to make the artistic choices visible but also to invite you to navigate through the creative process. Each section will contain a narrative dimension imagined by the artistic team, alongside a component strongly influenced by exchanges with the audience following various residency outings and public performances. As of January 31, 2024, after three years of theoretical research punctuated by periods of practice on stage, this narrative will be interspersed with different perspectives (actor, cameras, drone, blimp, etc.). At times, flashbacks and time travels will bring back earlier impressions. The goal is to navigate through the project in a multimodal manner, following the current dramaturgical thread interrupted by moments of retrospection. |
